The Writing and Research Development (WRD) Program

What is the Writing and Research Development (WRD) Program?

The University Writing Center offers the WRD Program for all UCM graduate students. This 10-week program includes regularly scheduled meetings with the University Writing Center's Graduate Consultant to achieve a specific goal for a writing project. Some examples of WRD Program goals include:

  • Dissertation research and writing
  • Area paper writing
  • Drafting for article publication
  • Grant or Fellowship application submission

Each WRD program consultation is adjusted to meet the needs of the writer in the program and are often structured as Accountabilibuddy sessions. These sessions can include:

  • Regular check-ins
  • Writing and organization consultations
  • Reading and research sessions
  • Reflection and revision consultations

Additionally, these sessions can be held in-person, via Zoom, or through eTutoring appointments. Sessions can be adjusted to accommodate schedule changes and preferences if notice is given at least 24 hours in advance. Participants who complete the program will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Who is the WRD Program for?

The WRD Program is designed for UC Merced graduate students at all stages of their academic programs, but especially those who:

  • Have completed their coursework requirements
  • Are looking for a structured way to center their writing and research goals, or
  • Have writing or research goals to achieve within a short period of time

Applications for the program are rolling and the weekly structure of the sessions can be adjusted to meet the needs of the writer throughout the semester.

How can I receive a Certificate of Participation?

Any active UC Merced graduate students can enroll in the WRD Program. Applicable students must attend at least 8 of the 10 weekly sessions in order to qualify for a Certificate of Participation. The research project or goals set at the beginning of the program do not necessarily need to be accomplished in order to receive a Certificate of participation. At the conclusion of the program, we invite the writer to participate in a short survey, reflecting on their experiences in the program and their next steps for the writing or research project.

How do I apply?

To apply for the WRD Program, please complete the form linked below. Applicants must submit the form by the 3rd week of the intended semester that they would like to enroll. Applications received after the 3rd week will be considered for the following semester.
